Do the participants need to have prior volleyball experience?

Absolutely not!  We are an instructional and recreational league that does not require prior volleyball experience.  While there will be kids with varying levels of experience one of the goals of South Valley Volleyball is for each player to be challenged and to be successful and satisfied at the level that they are at.

My child is pretty good, what will they get out of playing in this league?

The more “ball time” they have, the more they practice and the more they play will only improve an individuals skills and cause them to be more successful.  Additionally, and not to take anything away from any player, but each player’s skill level is relative to the competition that they play with or against in a school setting.  (The big fish in a little pond analogy.)  Not to mention the level of play can vary drastically between different grades, teams and school leagues.  We encourage player’s to participate in our leagues as we draw participants from the entire San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities.  It is a great way to play with other kids that share a similar interest and to gauge their skill level and knowledge to others their age.

How many players will there be on a team?

History has shown that 9 players per team is ideal to cover for players absences, vacations, illness and other factors.  However, the final number will depend on the number of participants.

How do you split up the players into teams?

Our South Valley Volleyball staff evaluates the players and their skills over the first few practices.  After evaluating, we try our best to divide the players into teams that are balanced and fair.  We believe that this type of evaluation is more efficient than a 1-day, 5 minute player evaluation where a player may have a bad day, get lucky or try to sandbag.

How is playing time determined?

Since the Minor and Major/Junior Division are an instructional and recreational league, players play every game and players follow a circular pattern where they are substituted in/out upon reaching a sideline.

Can I request my child to play with their friend?

The only guarantee is for siblings to be on the same team.  For the Minor and Major/Coed Divisions the South Valley Volleyball staff will make a reasonable effort to place friends on the same team,  However, we cannot guarantee it will happen.  The priorities for South Valley Volleyball is for the player’s to be safe, have fun, learn and for the teams to be as even as possible.  Please keep in mind that in the event that friends, even siblings, end up on different teams the majority of games for a division will be played at the same time, the same location and will end around the same time.

How long and how many times do teams meet per week?

What type of game format do you use?

Sets (games) use rally scoring and are generally played to 25 points but may be reduced if time becomes an issue.  Matches may be a best of 3 or may just be two sets.  Standings will be kept and points awarded for wins, losses and ties.  The final format will be determined by depending on the number of teams in each division and the allotted days and times that are scheduled for the league.

Why are there fundraisers for this league?

South Valley Volleyball Association is a non-profit organization that operates its programs on a limited budget.  In an effort to help keep Registration Fees down, yet still be able to cover regular league expenses and provide quality programs, South Valley Volleyball offers a few fundraisers that are simple and require minimal involvement during the season.  Without these fundraisers league fees would be 20 - 25% higher.
